EmpowerED: Mental Readiness for College Success
Heather and Katie have seen too many students struggle with their mental health in college and miss out on big opportunities in the process. They combined their expertise in developing evidence-based interventions with 20+ years of clinical experience to create EmpowerED, a 3 session coaching program, for high school seniors and college students.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why should I participate in this program?
College is an exciting time full of new academic and social opportunities. Unfortunately, college students are experiencing higher rates of mental health struggles than ever before. In fact, the mental health struggles of college students in America is currently described as a crisis by the National Education Association and the majority of students now meet criteria for at least one mental health problem. Additionally, emotional stress is identified as the most common reason for academic drop out. This program will teach you skills you can use in college to handle new stressors without getting off track.
How does the program work?
The program uses an evidence-based form of cognitive behavioral therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT interventions have been used to treat a myriad of different health problems, including anxiety, depression, stress, chronic pain and more. Recently, researchers have used ACT interventions on college campuses to help address the mental health struggles college students are facing. Studies have shown that college students participating in brief ACT interventions have experienced reduced depression, improved psychological, social and emotional well-being and improved self-esteem.
How is the program structured?
You will learn the skills associated with good mental health outcomes during two 60 minute coaching sessions with Heather (held in person or virtually, your choice). The first session is focused on identifying your values; what do you stand for and how do you want to be remembered? The second session is focused on (1) how to stay in the moment when you're worried about the past or future and (2) how to make room for negative thoughts and feelings while still moving in the direction of your values. You will then practice applying these skills to common college scenarios (such as meeting new people, roommate conflicts, social media/isolation on campus, academic workload) during a 60 minute session with Katie. We offer additional 60 minute coaching sessions as needed to help you apply skills learned to any current stressors you didn't anticipate.
How much does it cost?
Each coaching session costs $150. To reduce cost, you have the option of inviting up to two friends to join the three sessions and split the cost ($50/person).
